With an aim to provide minimum living support like food, cloth, health care for the older persons in rural areas our organization namely RGSS provided its Home care/ services in Jajpur district and Bolangir District. The shelter home for older persons continued its services to the physically weak and ill older persons through its technical staff and support mechanism. During the reporting period 50 such widow older persons were covered under the program.
With an aim to bring drug-free life in the society our organization has been conducting many awareness campaigns in Jajpur and Bolangir district since last seven years. To make more effective for fulfilling this objectives our organization has been running two Drug de-addiction centre in Jajpur and Bolangir District since last four years. The Drug De-addiction Centre is in line with IRCA guideline of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Govt. of India with 15 bedded indoor service provisions. During the reporting period total 134 addicted persons were identified by the local volunteers. Intoxication, counseling, and regular follow up for rehabilitation services are provided free in the centre. Part time doctor and requisite skilled man power has been engaged to provide uninterrupted services.
The SAI KRIPA Residential College of Science and Technology is a mile stone in the education sector of Dhenkanal district by RGSS. During the period 2019-20, 180 students were admitted in the +2 Science and total strength was 256. With a record breaking 100% result in the Annual Higher Secondary Examination 2017 gave new hopes. The students admitted in the college are provided residential facilities, free coaching and computer training besides +2 Science courses. The college is recognized by the Govt. of Odisha and affiliated to Council of Higher Secondary Education, Bhubaneswar, Odisha. The RGSS also submitted application for opening up of +3 Science to provide quality higher education to the local students.
With an objective of keeping the environment pollution free and to save Earth from this hazards our organization has been conducting regularly each year celebrating Earth Day followed by organizing Essay and Debate Competitions in Sai Kripa Residential College on 20th and 21st April 2018 respectively where 150 students participated. On 22nd April 2018, the Earth Day Celebration was held in the conference hall of Saikripa Residential college of Science and Technology. The seminar was inaugurated by Sri Dr. Prasanna Kumar Panda, the Chief Guest of the event. The speeches by Guests focused on the role of community and people at large to save earth from global warming now a day.
The Odisha has been experiencing devastating and dreadful natural calamities such as Super Cyclone, recurring of Floods, Droughts etc. affecting major parts of the State causing heavy damage & loss of valuable lives, Kinsmen, properties, bags and bagages etc. during the period of last 10 years . A major portion of the population in Odisha comes under below poverty line. The frequent emergence of Natural disasters exhaust the life style of these poor vulnerable people damaging a large volume of valuable Lives and Properties . The poor families are the worst suffers during presence of such Natural disasters and are miserable affected in consequence. The Rural Sector is seriously prone to frequent disasters and the sustenance of life style is becoming more pathetic and tragedy. In this regard, the Society organized villages under its jurisdiction and conducted disaster preparedness trainings
Looking at the high dropout rates of tribal girls in Telkoi of Keonjhar district and Pallahara block of Angul district, an Education Complex for Tribal girls was opened last two years with admission of 68 students from class one to class three. During the reporting period another 12 girls have been admitted. All students are provided free lodging, boarding, fooding and schooling facilities. Health checks up and yoga classes are undertaken on weekly basis. All teaching learning materials have been provided free of cost to these girls.
Consumer right is 'the right to have information about the quality, potency, quantity, purity, price and standard of goods or services’, as it may be the case, but the consumer is to be protected against any unfair practices of trade. It is very essential for the consumers to know these rights. Being associated with District Consumer Society and having a good net work of volunteers across the district, the organization has conducted some advocacy activities on protection of consumer rights through sensitization meetings at GP level in Sadar block of Dhenkanal district. Total seven such sensitization meetings were conducted during the reporting period.
Cultural programmes are the regular activities for both entertainment and education purpose. Like previous years RGSS organized annual cultural fest in the Campus of SAI KRIPA college, Kunjakanta, Dhenkanal in order to promote folk art and some traditional cultural shows among youths and students. Besides, one Block level Exhibition was organized for public participation and awareness creation in Pallahara block head quarter. Tribal folk dances along with martial arts were performed through different tribal groups from different parts of Keonjhar and Dhenkanal district to promote their cultural practices.
The skill development is one of the major focuses and a regular programme of RGSS to empower youths and women in rural areas. During the reporting period 2015-16, under the skill development following employable skill trainings were provided to 86 women and youths.
• Tailoring and Embroidery making: 30 women & girls for three months
• Bamboo Craft and brass works: 26 rural youths for 15 days
• Training on Computer application: 30 boys and girls of Higher secondary education level for six months
The beneficiaries were linked with financial and technical agencies for their productive engagement.
Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is a campaign initiated by the PM of India Sri Narendrabhai Modi on Gandhi Jayanti last year. The underlying reason for this campaign is to fulfil the vision of Mahatma Gandhi for a clean India. Like last year, the volunteers and members of RGSS organized SWACHH BHARAT CAMPAIGN works in Pallahara block head quarter of Angul district associating local volunteers, NGOs and other CSO people. Under the campaign cleaning of Roadside, Block Office campus and High school campus was done followed with a Sensitisation Meeting where students, local public and media people participated. The campaign activity was conducted on 2nd October 2018.
RGSS has already opened one hostel facility for SC and OBC girls in Kunjakanta of Dhenkanal where girls from rural areas studying in different institutions of Dhenkanal district head quarter are provided lodging and boarding facility. The Hostel Building now houses 120 girls and will be expanded to meet the increasing demands of the SC and OBC girls.
During the year 2019-20, RGSS initiated yoga as a health promotion measure at community level organizing community level Yoga Training program involving students, youths and women in 15 Villages of Pallahara block in Angul district. Yoga sessions were conducted in the Community hall by Resource persons. The Community level Yoga Promotion activities were conducted over a period of one month from 1st September 2019 to 30th September 2019. This program benefited the local people its positive effect in promotion of health and prevention of certain diseases. The present demographic and epidemiological transition of diseases at global level necessitates the need for strengthening practice of yoga at community level in developing countries like India..
With the objective of creating a sense of responsibility among students towards the current energy crisis our organization conducted mass awareness campaign in our office premises during this reporting year. In this program the technician’s speeches inspired the students to take action to spread awareness for using solar power energy alternate sources of energy in their daily uses. It aimed at increasing the knowledge of students and teachers on a range of renewable energy technologies, their applications, and economics of use.
In line with the commitment to ‘Health for All’ RGSS have a regular programme for organizing health awareness camps which apart from providing solutions, focus on information dissemination and preventive healthcare practices. Rural Healthcare is one of the biggest challenges that Odisha is facing today. High mortality rates are subjected to poor health care facilities in the rural areas. The situation of the rural people is vulnerable because of lack of education and public health awareness. During the reporting period five health awareness programs were conducted in both Dhenkanal and Pallahara of Angul district focusing on maternal and child health, malaria and dengue prevention at the household level. IEC materials and audio visual shows were conducted during the awareness program.
The older person welfare programme of RGSS also continued in Telkoi block areas during the year 2018-19. This year some areas of adjoining Pallahara block of Angul district also covered under the programme. The volunteers collected data of most needy disadvantaged older persons. The volunteers try to solve their problems either discussing with local Panchayata or taking the matter to District Administration. During the reporting period total 76 older persons including 21 widows have been provided welfare services through facilitation of their pension.
Many farmers in rural areas do not have the most up-to-date information on how to grow food efficiently and economically. Improving their knowledge of new techniques and technologies, in addition to providing them with any physical resources necessary for implementation, can dramatically increase the farmers’ level of productivity. Farmer’s Training programme was conducted in two locations of Dhenkanal district during the year 2018-19 to improve the farmer’s knowledge and to provide farm advisory services along with exposure visits to progressive farmers’ fields. Total 46 farmers were covered and the training was for a period of 10 days in November 2018.
Promotion of horticulture is seen as the viable alternative solution to livelihood challenges and income of the rural farmers. Like previous years, RGSS conducted one training programme in Dhenkanal for small and medium farmers covering 35 participants to orient and build their technical knowhow on horticultural crops, its cultivation, care and final marketing strategy. These farmers were covered from Hindol block of Dhenkanal district. During this training resource persons were engaged from district horticulture office and NGO persons having wide experiences in the field. After training horticultural plants were distributed to each farmer in association with district horticulture office.
During the reporting period RGSS observed the festives and national days like Independence day, Republic day, Gandhi Jayanti, Utkal Divas, Nua Khai, Ganesh Puja, Saraswati Puja, Children’s Day, Women’s Day, Earth Day etc.
